Bats wow audience at Mt. Pleasant library

Andrew Telfer thought a big brown bat looked more like a miniature dog with wings when he saw one at Veterans Memorial Library Saturday.

Dressed as the Flash for free comic book day at the library, Andrew was with his sister and father, Kate and Larry Telfer of Mt. Pleasant, to watch a presentation on bats by the Organization for Bat Conservation, an Oakland County bat rescue non-profit currently located at the Cranbrook Institute of Science in Bloomfield Hills.

Bat biologist Amanda Bevan, who said the organization will soon have its own home in Pontiac, wowed children, parents and teens with her knowledge of bats, the sometimes reviled mammal that gets a bad rap because of superstitions and old Hollywood movies.

In fact, Bevan said, bats are beneficial and an important animal that contributes much to the ecosystem.
