A disease that has decimated bat populations across the eastern United States has arrived in Nebraska.
A team of biologists recently found several dozen dead bats during a survey of an inactive limestone mine in Cass County. Later testing confirmed they died of white-nose syndrome, a fungal disease which affects hibernating bats.
There’s no known threat to humans, pets or livestock. But white-nose syndrome has killed off some 95 percent of the threatened northern long-eared bat population in the eastern U.S., and had similar impacts on populations of little brown bats and tri-colored bats.
