The date is set! Starting June 25th, the Bat Zone at Cranbrook Institute of Science will be again open to the public. The newly renovated Bat Zone is home to more than 200 nocturnal animals including 15 species of bats. The nine-month renovation was initiated to upgrade our HVAC system. We now have topnotch air conditioning, heat, and ventilation, not to mention the opportunity to redecorate the whole facility! Because of the growth, record breaking attendance, and support from our donors, the Bat Zone has had a facelift and just in time for next year’s 20th Anniversary! This renovation not only enhances our guest experience, but has helped improve the living space for our animals. Donor support especially helped renovate our animal kitchen. The professional grade restaurant counters provide us with a more sterile space for our keepers to prepare animal meals.
Our guided tours are led by Organization for Bat Conservation educators. Our educators will take you behind the scenes to see how we care for our animals while sharing interesting and important facts about our animals. They are experts, so ask them any question you want!
Our animals have come to us for many reasons. Some were injured in the wild and can not fend for themselves, others need specific bat medical treatments that our expert staff can administer, or another zoo sent us their animals upon closing. None of the animals that we care for can be released into the wild. While receiving top of the line care, our animals travel with us to educate people all over the country. Kamilah, our Malayan Flying Fox has been to 40 different states! Bat Zone tours are an opportunity to see where these famous animal ambassadors live when they are not touring schools, libraries, and events cross-country.
Come meet a vampire bat, see Molasses eat his afternoon snack, and get an up close look at a Megabat wing. Meet a native Michigan bat and learn what you can do to help bats in your backyard. Take all the pictures you like, but make sure to turn off the flash, our animals are used to be in the dark! Be inspired by our natural world when meeting some of its most mysterious species!
