GRAND BLANC TWP. – Local bats will now have a safe habitat to raise their young, thanks to Miguel Donnelly, a member of the Boy Scout Troop 238 and a senior at Grand Blanc High School.
An avid environmentalist, Donnelly recycled old General Motors (GM) car parts and turned them into bat houses for his Eagle Scout Service Project. With the assistance of his mentor and GM executive John Bradburn, who is also GM’s global manager for waste reduction, Donnelly salvaged old Chevy Volt battery covers and plastic computer chips that would otherwise end up in landfills.
After building them, the bat houses were donated to the Organization for Bat Conservation based in Pontiac (https://batconservation.org/). Bat houses are important as they provide a safe environment for hundreds of bats.
Female bats need a safe, warm place to raise their young, known as pups. They typically only have one each year, so populations are slow to grow. Plus, because of habitat loss, bats are finding it harder to find places to roost during the day.
