Even though Saturday’s event at the Indiana State University Science Building marked the 11th year for the Indiana Bat Festival, one of the coordinators admits that some of the same questions get asked from time to time.
“There are still some bat misconceptions,” said Joy O’Keefe, director of ISU’s Center for Bat Research, Outreach and Conservation.
“For example, people think bats are blind. Because they use echolocation, people think that they’re not able to actually use their eyes to navigate as well … but they are. Of course, they have a really heightened sense of echolation. They can see light-dark patches and they can see some of the landmarks. Their vision is not as acute as ours, but it is still pretty good.
